Thomas Sykes Obituary

On December 24, 2023, Thomas Henry Sykes Jr. transitioned from this life peacefully at home. Thomas was born on February 13, 1948 in Jackson, Tennessee. Thomas affectionately known as Sonny was the eldest son of Fanny Pickett and Thomas H. Sykes, Sr. The family moved to Milwaukee in 1949 and then to Beloit in 1950. Thomas called Beloit his home until the Lord called him to rest.

A charming loving man Thomas was known for his love of family as evident in his generosity and dependability. Thomas possessed a keen mind and his love of learning was expressed in his enjoyment of debating mostly any subject. After graduating high school he became an entrepreneur and statistician; owning and operating small businesses in insurance and investments. Thomas enjoyed traveling, long conversations and horse racing. He became a member of the Church Hills Downs/Kentucky Derby organization in the early 1970s and continued that relationship into present day. Thomas met and married Nina Tyler in 1970 and started their family in Chicago, Illinois. From from this union came a loving daughter, Simona Sykes-Walker.

He leaves to cherish his memory wife, Nina Tyler;  two sons, Tony Govan and Johnny Hines of TN; three daughters, Sonya Sykes – Douglas (Parrish), TN. Monica Sykes, TN and Simona Sykes – Walker (Eddie) IL,  grandchildren, Thomas O. Sykes, Shavon Sykes Bouziane, Antonia Sykes, Parrish, Douglas Jr. , Sheldon Douglas Marquita Swift (Montrell), Kimberly Sykes, Tiffany Pearson (Thomas) and Phillip Steward. Great grandchildren Taylee Sykes, Le’Rayia Sykes, Ka’liya Sykes, Ke’shawn Sykes, Kim’aya Sykes, Jayla Sykes, Trinity Pearson, Thomas Pearson Jr. and Caidence Thomas; one aunt, Margaret Holmes –WI., one sister, Sally Pickett – NJ,  brothers, Dean Pickett – WI, Anthony Pickett - NV, And Mark Pickett – TX, Willie Sykes - IL and Christopher Sykes of TN; in addition to his large family of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Predeceased by his grandparents, Emma and Brooks Sykes, Fannie and Jake Perry; his parents, Fannie and Thomas; his sister, Dorothy Jackson; and Granddaughter Nina Simone Sykes.
