Steven J. Smith

Steven J. Smith, “SoHi”, an accomplished machinist and avid plane watcher, passed away on June 17, 2023 in his home, at the age of 68. Born on May 15, 1955, he left a lasting impact on those who knew him and will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and community. Son to both Laura and Chuck Smith, he lived in Rockford for most of his life where he graduated from Guilford High School

After Steven graduated from Guilford High School, Steven dedicated a significant portion of his life to his work as a machinist at the Woodward, Barber–Colman, and Gates Corporation, where he excelled in his craft and earned a reputation for his skill and precision. His commitment to his profession was unwavering, and his contributions to the industry were highly regarded.

Outside of work, Steven found joy and solace in his hobbies. He had a deep passion for planes and could often be found at the local airport, watching aircraft take flight with great enthusiasm. In addition to his love for planes, Steven had a special place in his heart for animals. He was a devoted pet owner to three beloved dogs: Ginger, Kodah, and Daisy. Their loyal companionship brought him immense joy and comfort throughout his life. Steven's compassion extended beyond his own pets, as he generously supported Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary, recognizing the importance of animal welfare and the need to provide care and shelter for those in need. As one of his final requests, he has asked that part of his estate be donated to Noah’s Ark. Even though he has left us, his love for animals still remains.

Steven's sense of humor was legendary among his friends, who affectionately dubbed him the "president of the crash and burn society." He had a knack for finding the lighter side of life and bringing smiles to those around him.

Steven J. Smith's presence will be deeply missed by both his friends, family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Yet he leaves us to join his parents Laura and Chuck in a better place. A celebration of life service will be held to celebrate Steven's life and honor his memory.
