*August 14, 1945 – September 12, 2024*

Shirley Ann Miller Taggart was born on August 14, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, to Ruth Miller and Henry Jackson. From an early age, Shirley demonstrated a remarkable dedication to learning and self-improvement. After graduating from Harrison High School in Chicago, she embarked on a career as a professional secretary. Her pursuit of knowledge led her to further her education, ultimately earning a Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctorate degree—testaments to her unwavering commitment and passion for learning.

For over 30 years, Shirley dedicated herself to educating others, teaching as a Professor at Northeastern Illinois University and Malcolm X College. She worked with students from diverse backgrounds, shaping countless lives with her wisdom, patience, and love for knowledge. Shirley’s influence as an educator was immeasurable, and her legacy lives on in the students she taught and the colleagues she inspired.

Shirley was married twice, first to Mr. Samuel Stray Sr., with whom she had her beloved children. Later, she met and married Mr. Arthur Lewis Taggart. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and she cherished every moment spent with her loved ones. Shirley had a deep love for reading, expanding her mind, and sharing her knowledge with others.

Shirley leaves behind a wealth of cherished memories and a legacy of love, learning, and family. She is survived by her son, Sam Stray, Jr. (Rockford); her daughter, Lachun Taggart (Rockford); two sisters, Jacqueline Johnson and Gloria Johnson; one brother, Steve Johnson; and eight grandchildren: Toi, Andrea (Dominique), Antwaine, Marcus, Dewanna, Brieanna, Antoine Jr., and Michael. She is also lovingly remembered by 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Shirley was predeceased by her mother, Ruth Miller, her father, Henry Jackson, her two sisters, Mildred Webster and Claudette Miller, her son, Michael Stray, her daughter, "Lil" Shirley Taggart, and her beloved Auntie, Naomi Wright;  niece and nephew Lynette Miller and Van Miller.

Shirley will be remembered for her immense love for her family, her passion for education, and her profound impact on the lives of those who were fortunate enough to know her. She touched many hearts with her kindness and wisdom, and her legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.
