Shawn C. Smith

September 6, 1974 ~ October 18, 2020 (age 46)

Obituary

Shawn Christopher Smith, 46, was born and raised in Rockford, Illinois to Lawrence E. and Rozene Smith.  A member of AME church affiliations, Shawn accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age.  Shawn graduated from East High School in May of 1994 in Rockford and attended Kishwaukee Jr. College.  He would maintain friendships with students and teachers throughout his adult life.  In 2018, Shawn sponsored a surprised birthday celebration for one of his favorite, elementary principals, Mrs. Giovanni Van, with dozens of red roses blowing in the wind on the back of his motorcycle.

Shawn was an advocate for children as witnessed by his countless hours as a volunteer in local organizations.

Modeling the adage, “treating others the way he wanted to be treated”, Shawn used his infectious smile to win friends and to influence people, working various jobs in construction and truck driving.

Shawn was employed with the Local Union 196 before obtaining his CDL and becoming a self-employed truck driver.

Shawn was an avid motorcyclist who lived to ride.  He always talked very highly of his sisters, Robin & Renee’. Blu, Shawn’s Pitt Bull and his partner in crime.

A free spirit and an ambassador of good trouble, Shawn would often use a good ride to shake off the frustration and disappointment of racism, social injustice and the like.  He was unapologetically vocal about hypocrisy, catapulting him as a leader among his cohorts.

Shawn departed this life on October 18, 2020.  He was preceded in death by his Grandparents Arthur B. and Arletta Carey and Charles and Martha Smith.  He leaves to cherish his memories: Parents Lawrence E. and Rozene Smith; Sisters, Robin L. Smith-James and Renee’ D. Lawson, and a host of nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends: Waymon, Matt & Marwin.

Pallbearers: Stephan Miller, Waymon Gates, Justin Anthony, Marwin Leslie, Matt Yarber

Honorary Pallbearers:  Melvin James, Max James, Cortlyn James, Brandon James.
