Sadie Mae Walker-Brooks, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, was born on July 1, 1940, in Inverness, Mississippi. She peacefully transitioned from this life on December 5, 2024.
Sadie Mae shared a beautiful life with her devoted husband, Errol T. Brooks, whom she married in 1961. Together, they raised a beloved daughter, Valerie M. Brooks of Dolton, IL. Sadie Mae’s legacy is carried on by her five grandchildren, whom she adored: Courtney W. Manson (Shareese), Kelvin L. Wilson, Jr., Kristina R. Wilson, Kenneth T. Wilson, and Kimberly M. Wilson, all of Dolton, IL. She is also survived by her brother, Franklin D. Walker of Chicago, IL, and three step siblings: Arzrow Staten, Mary Barnett, and Kimberlee Staten. Her loving family includes over 50 nieces and nephews who were dear to her heart.
A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, Sadie Mae dedicated 35 years of service to the federal government. Her devotion to others extended beyond her work, as she was an active and committed member of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. She gave her time and talents to Allen Chapel AME Church in Rockford, IL, and New Harvest AME Church in Harvey, IL, where she served faithfully in the Women's Missionary Society, the Lay Organization, and as a Pastor’s Steward.
Sadie Mae was the unwavering heart and soul of her family, always placing great importance on education and guiding her grandchildren with love and wisdom. Her joy for life shone through in her many interests—whether sailing on jazz cruises, attending the Kentucky Derby, or curating her treasured collection of butterflies and angels. She found peace in gardening, delight in cooking, and a deep satisfaction in the joy of shopping. Above all, she was a strong Christian woman who opened her home and her heart to those in need, embodying kindness and grace in everything she did.
Sadie Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Era Sr. and Isola Walker, six sisters and seven brothers, and two step siblings. She was also preceded by two very special friends, Helen Bins and Ramona Sims, who held a special place in her heart.
While Sadie Mae will be deeply missed, her love, faith, and devotion to family will forever remain an inspiration to all who knew her.
