Marie Yarbrough (“Big Fella”) of Rockford, Illinois departed this earthly life on Saturday, June 29, 2024. Born May 23, 1928 in Whelan Springs, Arkansas, to Annie Mae Hubbard and Bennie Jenkins, Marie graduated from Gurdon High School in Arkansas and moved to Rockford, Illinois where she married the love of her life Rural Yarbrough Jr. on December 5, 1947 at Providence Baptist Church by Reverend Robinson. Marie along with her husband became committed community members and raised an extensive and close-knit family. Marie worked as a Matron at the Winnebago County Jail while also owning her own nail shop until her retirement. Marie was a devoted member of Macedonia Baptist Church for over five decades serving on the Nursing Board, as a Missionary, and a Mother of the church. She had an immense love for her children, grandchildren, and hats.
Marie loved to cook for her family, friends, and she was famous for her hot water cornbread. No matter who you were, her door was always open with an unwavering welcome.
Marie leaves to cherish many loving memories and family. She is survived by her children, Eltesia (Sylvester) Williams, Ann (Paul) Kelly, Joyce Miller, Pam (Reginald) Alexander, April (Andre) Cummings, and James Yarbrough, 19 grandkids, 32 great-grandkids, and 23 great-great-grandchildren. Additionally, her special friends, Mrs. Hazel Alexander, Ms. Wonda Rice, her caregiver, Ms. Lois Haire, and a host of relatives. Marie is predeceased by her husband Rural, parents Annie and Bennie, sons Leroy (“Butch”) and Kenneth Yarbrough, and first born grandchild Steve Yarbrough.
