On February 15, 1996 in Buffalo, New York God blessed Belinda Williams-Lokey and Curtis Lokey, Jr with a very special gift, Mariah Janay Lokey.
Mariah relocated to Louisiana in 2003 and attended Apollo Elementary school where she enjoyed cheering & began her music journey. She played both the piano and guitar, was a dedicated lyricist and recorded her own music. She was selected to audition for The Voice, America’s Got Talent and The Apollo Theater, in her success, she was invited to complete a second round of auditions for The Voice. Mariah achieved 1st place at the Louisiana State Fair for her vocal performance. She continued her passion for music while attending Airline High School, singing at various talent events and venues. She would sometimes record herself singing and would send songs to others in efforts to uplift their spirits. Later, she pursued her Bachelors Degree in Psychology from the Louisiana State University at Shreveport (LSUS) in her quest to position herself to help others.
Mariah took employment opportunities in retail as well as the insurance industry. She loved helping others, especially the elderly and was known for her dramatic and comedic anecdotes. She also relished in the simplicities of life such as walking her furry best friend Brooklyn, long walks and conversations in the park with her mom, viewing her favorite Peruvian lilies and listening to all music genres. Mariah truly loved spending most of her time with her sister, Teonna whom she greatly admired. She would always seek her counsel when making decisions and was appreciative of her advice. She enjoyed numerous friendships, spending time with family, taking trips and traveling with her mom when she could.
Mariah was truly an exceptionally gifted musician and vocal diva who’s profound lyrics penetrated and changed the lives of those who read or heard them. Her inquisitive and friendly personality with a splash of sassiness and unapologetic boldness will be greatly missed by all who loved her.
The family wishes to also acknowledge the significant impact to Mariah’s life of the predeceased, truly wonderful father figure, Javone Lamont Reed, Sr, as he was faithful and unwavering in his daily support of her especially as she traveled and auditioned in support of achieving her dreams. In her relationship with him, she found her voice. Mariah leaves a legacy of love.
