Lamar O’keith Coates, Sr., 54, of Rockford, IL, passed away on September 22, 2025.He was born on October 19, 1970, in Rockford, the son of Willie (Mary Polk) Coates and Brenda (Mike) Foster.
Lamar was a proud graduate of Auburn High School, Class of 1989, where he played on the football team. Following high school, he honorably served his country in the United States Army. He earned a degree in Business Administration from Rockford Business College, and certifications in Building Maintenance and Personal Training. He worked as a machine operator at PCI for 10 years, and then went on to work as a forklift operator for ConAir Corporation, a position in which he was known for his dedication and strong work ethic.
Lamar was baptized in 2020 at Silver Hill Pentecostal Church. He enjoyed watching football and working out. Lamar had a deep passion for fitness and could often be found at the gym, where he not only worked on his own strength but also encouraged others around him.
He is survived by his beloved children: Lamar Coates Jr., Shanitra Coates, Ashley (Kewone) Wright, Shyliqua Citchens, Taylor Coates, Jabari Coates, Aaran Gabrielle Lang, Laila Pena, Rhianna Coates, and Kennedey Coates; Grandchildren: Lamarion, Kashton, Ka’oir Jon’cier ,Za’niah,Za’riah, E’Zeriah, My’Liah Malaysia ,Messiah, Kaleeya, Ayris, and Adrian, his mother, Brenda Foster; Stepmother, Mary Polk, and his siblings, Lamont Coates, Reginald Coates, and Marco Coates; special uncle: Earl Copeland, special cousins: Charles Thomas, Carlos Love, Harold Foster, and Eric Davis, special friend: Paul Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Willie Coates, and grandmother, Lillie B. Beasley.
Lamar will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love for family, and his steady, resilient spirit. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength that will continue through his children and all who knew him.
