Jessie Johnson Obituary

Jessie Lee Johnson Jessie Lee Johnson, 104 of Rockford, IL, was called home to the Master on December 6", 2023.

Jessie was born in Union City, Tennessee on November 11", 1919 to Jesse and Molly (Williams) Burris. She moved to Freeport, IL and later met and married her husband, Albert Johnson on December 12", 1945. Jessie and Albert raised four children together Charlotte, Floyd (Buck), Doris (Jeannie) and Elaine (Michaelle).  Being the driven and ambitious woman that she was, Jessie set her eyes on the Chicago Art Institute and was one of the first African American women to graduate the prestigious school. She was an excellent tailor and was known for her work. She taught classes at Rock Valley College for over 20 years. In the 70's she and a good friend started their own business, "Heavenly Threads". They made detailed vestments for Priests, among other things. Her family, friends and business were important to her but what progressively governed her life was an intimate relationship with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Jessie is survived by two daughters, Charlotte Martin, and Michaelle (Michael Lewis) Rooker;  A host of Grandchildren, a bounty of Great Grandchildren, Great Great and even Great Great Great Grandchildren. Jessie had several friendships over the years, but she leaves two cherished friends P.J. Woodworth and Cleolia Penix that she held dear. She also leaves a host of God children, great God children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and others that she claimed as her family and are too numerous to name.

Jessie was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Johnson, her son Floyd L. Johnson (Buck), her daughter Doris (Jeannie) Miller, her grandsons Brian Johnson, Steven Miller and Nathanial| Bruce, her only brother Franklin L. Burris and her dear friend Rosie Farrar.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00pm at St. Paul Church of God in Christ, 1001 Bishop Washington Ave., Rockford, II 61102.
