Augustus Jones

Augustus “Gus” Earl Jones, 68, of Rockford, Illinois departed this earthly life on February 5, 2021. He was born May 24, 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee the son of Pastor Marie Mitchell and Orman Jones, Sr. Gus lived over 65 years in Rockford. He was employed as a store manager for over 20 years at O’Donnell’s grocery store,several years as a store manager at One Stop grocery and as a butcher at Gray’s IGA, where he was known for providing excellent customer service with a smile. He was also employed for many years at Barber Coleman. Gus’s favorite pastime was gathering with his family and friends, where he would prepare delicious soul food dishes for them.

Gus leaves to cherish many loving memories his devoted mother, Marie Mitchell: his children Augustus  Jones of Rockford, Cedric Braxton of Wisconsin, RashontayMitchell-Mabians of Indiana; his grandchildren Sacoyaand Jacoyous Mitchell, Amiya, Akeem and Arianna Young and other grandchildren: his siblings FlorastineCrawford of Bakersfield, CA, Orman Jones Jr. of Rockford, Linda Jones of Rockford, Sandra (Robert) Goodwin of Belleville, IL, Stephanie (Dwight) McDonald of San Diego, CA, Algwanda Dussard of Elgin, IL, Cindy (Roosevelt) Parker of Rockford, Holly Mitchell of Rockford, Nicki Mitchell of Rockford; his aunts; Maria Charles, Robbin Hannah, Wilhelmina Kirkwood; his uncles; Dr. Roudell Kirkwood, Calvin Kirkwood; loving nieces Janetta Goodwin, Jenny Jones and Cicely Parker; caring nephew Richard Parker; extended family Gloria O’Neal and Floyd Prunty; and numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. 

Gus was predeceased by his paternal father, Orman G. Jones, Sr; loving fathers; Sammie Tharps and Morris Mitchell; maternal grandmother Dorothy Kirkwood; brother Edwin Donald Jones; uncles Bishop Hariis, Jessie Harris, Cleveland Tharps and Dave Tharps; nephews James Black and Samuel Jones; closest friends John McMurtry and Roy B. Purifoy, Sr.  He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. 

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 22, 2021 at Collins & Stone Funeral Home, 128 S. 5th Street Rockford, Illinois. Services will also be streaming live on Facebook via Collins & Stone Facebook website or online at collinsandstonefh.com.  A walk through Visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
